Committee Descriptions

Programs & Education

This is the committee for you if you like to plan events and are passionate about furthering members’ professional development.


The programs & education committee is charged with planning and implementing events that offer unique, timely and insightful information. Program topics range from panel discussions to facilitating networking events, while educational events are designed to help marketers and business developers at all levels do their job better and enhance their career. 

  • Identify and secure expert speakers for a range of engaging events.
  • Help with event logistics like printing name badges, coordinating food or photography needs, and staffing the registration table.
  • Coordinate speaker gifts and thank you notes to show our appreciation.

Outreach

If networking and planning special events excite you, then you should probably join this committee!


This dynamic committee is responsible for orchestrating all of our chapter’s special events, including the annual Holiday Party and our local Marketing Communications Awards (MCAs). They also play a crucial role in securing vital sponsorships that support all SMPS Kansas City initiatives. Additionally, this committee has a hand in planning the Missouri Valley Regional Conference (MVRC), a significant event our chapter hosts every eight years.

  • Help recruit sponsors to secure the essential funding that brings our programs and events to life.
  • Assist in planning our annual signature events or serving as a Regional Conference Liaison when it’s our turn to host.
  • Coordinate MCA Award submissions to celebrate and recognize outstanding marketing and communications work.

Communications

Are you a great writer? Have a knack for graphic design? Consider yourself a social media guru? Then the Communications is for you!


The communications committee is responsible for all external communications including social media, email newsletters, website and graphics. This committee exemplifies teamwork by working closely with all the board members to strategize and develop campaigns that drive attendance and excitement about our events.

  • Help brainstorm social and email campaign initiatives that boost engagement and promote our chapter's value.
  • Design compelling graphics for our website, social media channels and email newsletters.
  • Update website content to keep our online presence fresh, informative and user-friendly.

Membership

If you are looking to get connected quickly with other SMPS members and love to spearhead social events, you are meant to be involved in this committee.


The membership committee is all about creating lasting relationships to continue building a strong chapter for SMPS and our city. Responsible for overall member engagement and experience, they welcome new members and help them find their place in the chapter. 

  • Greet new members at events to help them feel welcome and connect with others.
  • Coordinate mentorship applications to pair members for professional growth.
  • Assist in planning engaging membership and/or mentorship events.

Micro-Volunteering

Beyond our core committees, we also offer dynamic volunteer opportunities to support various board initiatives and special projects. These roles are perfect if you’re looking for flexible ways to contribute to the chapter’s growth and impact. 

  • Help brainstorm social and email campaign initiatives that boost engagement and promote our chapter's value.
  • Support our CPSM (Certified Professional Services Marketer) program by coordinating info sessions, study groups, and book logistics to help members achieve their certification
  • Support our Scholarship program by creating and maintaining scholarship applications, and coordinating the judging process.
  • Serve as a Membership Milestone Champion to track annual membership anniversaries, coordinate social media recognition with the Communications team, and potentially arrange for small gifts or plaques for long-standing members.
  • Organize philanthropic initiatives and events that allow our chapter to give back to the community.
  • Collaborate with local universities to spread the word about SMPS to students through class presentations, career fairs, or student-focused events like resume writing workshops and interviewing tips.
  • Explore Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and identifying opportunities for our chapter to grow and foster a more inclusive environment.
